No mumbaikar can forget 26th Nov 2008 – The day when 10 Pakistani terrorist spread across South Mumbai and went on a killing spree. It was a long battle between the terrorist and the armed forces, with the armed forces managing to kill 9 terrorists and capture one of them (Read: kasab) alive.

The Democratic Front government in Maharashtra has so far spent a staggering Rs 31 crore, or nearly Rs 8.5 lakh per day, to keep the 21-year-old terrorist alive.

Kasab has been found guilty of 80 charges under various acts including “waging war against nation” and mass murders, for which minimum punishment prescribed in law is life imprisonment and the maximum death penalty.

Finally, Kasab was awarded death sentence for the 26th Nov 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. The verdict came 17 months after Kasab and nine other Pakistani terrorists trained, armed and funded by Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba let loose death and destruction on Mumbai on November 26, 2008.

As per the law, the death penalty will have to be confirmed by the Bombay High Court. Kasab also has the right to move the high court against the trial court verdict. Even if the high court upholds the judgment, he can appeal to the Supreme Court. If the apex court too upholds the sentence, he has the option of filing a mercy petition before the President of India.
