Ever wondered if you could verify if a certain email address actually exists? I’m not sure why you would need to do so, but in case you ever, here’s a quick solution.

Email Address verifier. This website verifies if the user/mailbox actually exists on the server.

I tried testing this website with a fake email it, and to my surprise it resulted with an “OK”, which means the account does exist. (It DOESN’T actually)

So sorry, test failed and this website is good for nothing. Instead of digging it, we should have a link to say “This website sucks” !!

Update: A little more research verified that the website can detect incorrect domain names, but doesn’t detect if the user has a mailbox.

Most corporates have Internet Access restrictions, and mine is no exception. At work, we are not allowed to visit popular social networking sites like orkut, facebook. Initially, I was kinda upset that I wont be allowed to use facebook at work, but with the help of Proxy sites (or whatever you may prefer calling them) I can visit any website from work, even if it is blocked.

These sites allow you to browse the web anonymously and access sites that are blocked.

I havent tried all the above websites, but my personal fav is Vtunnel

Initially, I didnt like using gmail, but ever since I’ve started using Google Apps to manage my personal emails, I’ve fallen in love with the gmail interface, and wanted to move all my Outlook emails to gmail.

I tried using the GML software but it required the .NET framework, and often hung without uploading all the emails.

Here is a very easy way to upload your Outlook mails to Gmail, without the need of any software.

Step 1: Enable IMAP on your Gmail/Google Apps account. This step by step tutorial tells you how to enable IMAP.

Step 2: After you configure GMail on your Outlook (as part of the above step), you will see the IMAP folder (Gmail) and it will list out all the labels that you use as separate folders.

Step 3A: If you dont not wish to maintain a backup of the emails in Outlook, and just want them in your gmail inbox, drag the mails to your gmail Inbox (Under IMAP folder). If you drag them to your labels folder, they will automatically be labelled.

Step 3B: If you do wish to keep a copy of all emails in Outlook, you can right click on the folder you wish to upload, and hit -> Copy folder. Once the folder is copied, you can move those emails to GMail, so your original emails will still be stored in Outlook.

This could take a while, especially if you have large emails. I tried selecting all the emails, and moved them to gmail, and my Outlook hung, so I did them one batch at a time.

So you like the GMail interface, but dont want a GMail account. Not an issue anymore, as Google has come up with Google Apps.

Google Apps is a service from Google for using custom domain names with several Google products. This post will only talk about the EMail functionality. Once you register with Google Apps, you can use your account just like you would use a regular GMail account, which means you get all the standard features of GMail. You get 6GB+ of storage, less spam and of course mobile access.

First things first. Sign up for for Google Apps

Note:
1. You should have access to upload files to your domain. Google will ask you to upload a file for verification purposes.
2. You should be authorized to alter the MX Entry (you should find this in your CPanel), so that the emails are handled by GMail and not by your regular host.

On the sign up page, follow the below steps.

Step 1 - Enter your domain name
Step 2 - Self explanatory. Enter all the reqd fields.
Step 3 - Create your Admin account

Once you create your Admin account, you are taken to your Dashboard. You then see a link to ‘Verify your Domain Ownership’. This is the process where Google asks you to upload a file to your server, to authenticate you.

Once authenticated, you then need to activate your email (again link on your dashboard).

To activate your email, you need to change your MX Entry to

ASPMX.L.GOOGLE.COM. - Gives this a Priority 10
You dont need to worry about the other entries mentioned. Changing only this will work.

Voila !! You’re done - You can now use your domain email with GMail interface.
